Frequently Asked Questions

Lithium Ion Battery
The rechargeable lithium ion has numerous advantages over NiCd or NiMh batteries such as higher energy density and very low self-discharge The Lithium-Ion battery provides an energy density about twice that of the NiCd at similar load currents, and can therefore provide a longer standby than a similar NiCd or NiMh battery.

The Li-Ion battery is very stable and considered safe as no metallic lithium is used.

Why should I upgrade from my current mobile telephone ?
The Nokia 6110 is a cool new mobile. The mobile uses TRUE 3 volt technology which means power consumption is less, and standby and talk times are greater than previous models.

The Nokia 6100 phones fully support GSM Phase 2 features. They also support all three wireless voice codecs: Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) for improved voice quality, Full Rate, and Half Rate. Nokia developed the EFR jointly with the University of Sherbrooke, and drove the adoption of EFR to the industry standard for GSM. Nokia 6100 phones use 3V technology. The products have a full range of accessories that are compatible with the Nokia 6100 series.

The size and weight of the mobile are just right.

How long should by battery last in standby mode ?
The standard 900mAh LiOn battery supplied with the mobile should last anywhere from 60 hours to 270 hours. This is of course network dependent and will also vary according to what options you have enabled on your mobile. I have EFR enabled and use my mobile moderately and still get about 130 hours standby.

How can I prolong the life of my battery ?
Always charge your new battery for at least 16 hours before use, longer if possible. The first few charges and critical in the life of the battery and it will take several cycles before normal operating capacity is reached. The battery supplied with the mobile takes approximately 4 hours to charge using the ACP-7 charger, and about 1 hour and 30 minutes using the ACP-9 charger.

Why is my battery standby so low ?
This can be a result of a number of factors. These include both making and receiving calls/SMS messages, receiving broadcast messages, your distance in relation to a base station, how your providers network is configured and what type of SIM card you have.

Cell broadcast is where your GSM network can broadcast information to all the mobiles in the area. The most common application for this feature is to broadcast the Cell ID information.

The location of base stations will affect performance dramatically. If you are close to a site, your power consumption is reduced. The further away you move from the site, the higher you power consumption.

The 6110 supports EFR and this can reduce battery standby by approx 5%, according to Nokia. Disabling this feature will result in an increase in standby of approx 30%. Having said that, most modern networks utilise discontinuous reception and transmission. What this means is when you are not talking, your mobile is not transmitting, and also vica versa. This can certainly offset the additional power needed to utilise the EFR facility.

If you can get a Phase 2 SIM card, grab one. These cards will enter a power standby mode and consume about 3mAh.

Can I use my 5110 with a laptop/PDA/PC...... ?
Certainly can ! Visit the Nokia web site or my page on how to connect to PC to get more information on the data options available to you.

I already have the Nokia Data Suite for the 8110/3810. Can I use this ?
Nokia Australia advised me that version 1.0 of the data suite is only for the 8110 and 3810 series. Owners of the 5110 and 6110 series need to use Data Suite 1.2 which costs $259. Alternatively, version 2.0 is released and has Windows NT support.

Help ! I cracked the screen on my 6110 !
I suggest taking it to a Nokia Service Centre as the 6110 does not have XPress On covers. Nokia haave released the cover and palstic screen as seperate items for sale so the cost is quite minimal now. I replaced the entire front of the mobile for $45 and this was performed by an authorised Nokia Service Centre.

My screen keeps doing funny things !
The seems to be a problem which affects some Nokia 6110s. The LCD screen can start to flare in and out, and also hold a residual current charge resulting in a slow discharge after turning the mobile on or off or even changing menus. This problem is related to the LCD screen making poor contact with the connectors. Take the mobile to an authorised Nokia Sevrice Centre if this is an issue and they can look at either repairing the mobile or replacing it with a re-manufactured unit under warranty.

What are these games I keep hearing about?
Three games are available on the mobile phone. They are Snake, Memory and Logic.

Snake : The classic games where you make the snake eat the food (dot) and it grows. You are not allowed to crash into a wall or your tail. The aim is to get the largest snake possible.

Memory : Perhaps you played this with cards. Pictures are turned face down and you have to try and get a matching pair. That pair is then eliminated and you continue until there are no cards left.

Logic : You are presented with a number of figures above a horizontal line. You then have to use these figures to crack the secret code. The code goes vertically DOWN the screen and is four characters long. The number of figures you have you choose from is from4 to 10 depending on the level you select. An example of the screen is as follows:

This is showing you four symbols you have to choose from. The game starts by you filling in the four boxes under these symbols with your guess at the character positions :

You then press the * key to see how many are in the correct place. The screen you will then see is :
